DOCUPEN PEN #R700 SCANNER RECHARGEABLE

Years ago I wanted to buy my father, who loves to make copies of articles or cut things out of newspapers and magazines, one of those handheld devices that you could run down a page and that would spit out a strip of copy paper showing the text and graphics that you'd rolled it over. I waited too long, though, and they disappeared from the market before I could get one. That was probably a good thing given how small a strip of paper they produced, but it always nagged at me, especially considering how many pieces of paper my father has given me in the years since then.

Then the folks at PLANon Systems Solutions answered my prayers with their surprisingly good looking and easy-to-use R700 DocuPen Portable Scanner. The R700 is basically an overgrown, pen-sized scanner that you move down an object--be it a book, or magazine, or newspaper, or photograph, or blueprints, or expense receipts, or cartoon on your buddy's cube wall, or Far Side calendar on your boss's wall--and then take back to your computer for downloading; not immediately, of course, because it's got 2 MB of storage, which PLANon says can hold up to 100 pages (see below for more realistic storage estimates). It also comes with ScanSoft's PaperPort software for OCR, so if you're a student you can grab reference materials for later use, etc.

The R700 is the black & white version (PLANon also makes the RC800 portable scanner, which is the more advanced color version, and "Professional" versions of the R700 and RC800, which come with Sprint FineReader software from ABBYY) of the scanner, and when Diana contacted me to see if I wanted to try it out , I was psyched. I've been using it for several weeks now in a variety of environments and for many purposes, and it's been working like a charm, producing some impressive scans. It took me a little while to learn how to use it properly to generate the ideal scans (the excellent manual gives you several pages of scanning instructions and tips right up front), but once I got that down I was using the DocuPen like a pro every time.

The R700 arrives in a small box with the scanner, the software, a USB cable, a leather case (complete with styrofoam insert to prevent folding/wrinkling), and a Quick Start Guide.
